8 Must-Read Moving Tips

Moving day always brings its own list of trails and challenges.  Here are a few steps to make sure you stay on the right track with your move.

  1. Start a moving file to keep track of all your moving related documents.  With so many things to keep track of, it is easy to start missing some of the details.  We also recommend making a checklist to keep your move organized.  As you complete each task you can cross it off of your checklist and add any related documentation to your moving file.

  2. How are you going to get your belongings from your current home to your new home?  Choosing between enlisting the help of friends or hiring professional movers can be a difficult decision to make.  Though relying on friends to help you move may be less expensive, it could ultimately be more costly if something gets broken.  Take the time to evaluate the pros and cons of both scenario to determine which is right for your move.

  3. Now it is time to determine a date.  Your helpers will likely need to re-arrange their weekend so they can come help you.  Make sure you grant them the courtesy of giving them adequate notice of your move.  Subtle reminders will help to remind them that your big day is coming and their help is appreciated.
  4. Contact your moving company to make accommodations for your move.  Trucks can often book up fast - especially during moving season.  It is helpful to have a couple of alternate dates in the event that the moving company is booked on the date you wish to move.

  5. Collect materials for moving.  Grocery stores are a great place to wrangle boxes for your move.  Store clerks are usually happy to give them away to help a customer and save some space in their dumpster. Though supermarket boxes are readily available, just make sure that they are clean and free of any odors before packing up your valuables.  If you use a box that has food residue or odor left behind, your belongings could take on the smell of the box. In addition to boxes, you will need tape, permanent markers, newspapers, and bubble wrap.

  6. Congrats, now you are ready to start packing!  Moving day always goes more smoothy when all of the boxes are packed ahead of time.  You can start packing by boxing up items that you use on only a semi-frequent basis.  If you have not used in in the last two weeks, then chance are you are not going to need it in the next few weeks to come. If it looks like garbage, then it probably is.  Donate your older items to charity or your local landfill. Such items only take up space in your moving truck and eventually your new home.

  7. Process your paperwork.  When you move, you need to update your your address with the DMV, credit card companies, your doctors offices, and the post office.  By setting up a forwarding address at the post office, the postal service will send all of the mail from your old address to your new address.  These forwarded pieces of mail are great reminders of who needs your new address.

  8. Don't put anything in your new garage that you cannot drive down the road!  Garages usually turn into storage units during moving time.  Once boxes collect in the garage, they usually stay there for quite a long time.  By having the final destination of each box clearly marked, you can have your helpers put boxes in their assigned rooms.
